Six Ways To Boost Home Security

March 6, 2022 by jmcferon

These days, there’s no way to be too careful about home security. Gone are the days of simple locks and sturdy doors that keep intruders out. After all, there’s almost no price you can put on feeling safe and secure. So if you could use some inspiration on how to boost home security, consider these six ways:

Boost Home Security

Alarm Systems

First and foremost is an alarm system that will sound in the event of smoke or fire, carbon monoxide detectors for when you’re asleep, and motion sensors throughout the house so you’ll know if anything’s amiss when you can’t be there. Today’s advanced security systems can get configured with zones so you can choose which sensors will go off if activated. Plus, they have smartphone apps, so you can stay connected even when you’re away from home.

Install Outdoor Lighting

The second is outdoor lighting that operates with motion sensors, so it turns on when someone comes within range. That way, potential intruders looking to hide in the dark get exposed by the light. Outdoor lighting also adds visibility to your home, which can help you feel more secure.

Secure Your Entranceways

Kick your door lock to the curb and invest in a deadbolt that’s rated to protect against forced entry. These locks are available at most hardware stores or home improvement retailers for DIY projects, or contact a locksmith for professional installation. Additionally, installing smart doorbells and security cameras will alert you if someone comes to your door for any reason.

Secure Your Perimeter

While it could seem like a lot of work for little gain, fully fenced yards will add both visual and actual security to the exterior of your house. In addition, if you have children or pets, it adds an extra level of safety when they’re outdoors. Most importantly, it’ll be apparent that your yard is private property, which alone may be enough to discourage someone from acting out.

Upgrade your Windows

Your windows are easy to access points for intruders, so treat them as such by replacing traditional panes with fire-rated glass or bulletproof plexiglass. Even if the first floor of your home is easily accessible to burglars, they won’t be able to break through these types of windows. If a total window replacement project isn’t feasible, consider applying a window film that prevents window glass from shattering.

Review Your Insurance Coverage

Before a fire or break-in ever occurs, you should review your homeowner insurance policy to ensure that it includes enough coverage to replace everything that you own. If not, get together with your insurance company or representative to discuss adding what’s necessary. Remember, the last thing you want is your new security measures to go wasted because of insufficient or nonexistent insurance coverage.

We hope you find these tips to boost home security helpful. And, if you’re thinking about buying or selling a home in the Colorado Springs area, please get in touch! We’d be pleased to get you started with a customized MLS search.
