Home Improvements That May Harm Your Home Value

February 22, 2022 by jmcferon

Are you thinking about making some home improvements to boost your home value? Whether you’re painting the walls, putting in a new roof, or remodeling the kitchen, it’s essential to consider how these upgrades can affect your home’s value. But, unfortunately, some home improvements can make your home less valuable! In this blog post, we’ll discuss some common home improvements that could damage the value of your home.

Home Value

Eccentric Lighting

Eccentric lighting is among the most common home improvements that can hurt your home’s value. Examples of unconventional lighting choices could be installing a chandelier in the bathroom or neon lights in the kitchen. Unfortunately, while these may be fun and make your home look and feel unique, they can make it less desirable to potential buyers.

Over-Improving

Over-improving is another common mistake. Over-improving means making too many expensive or high-end changes to your home. For example, installing granite countertops or floors in an otherwise dated home may be less desirable to buyers. In addition, it could cause red flags that they may need to spend even more money to bring it up to date.

Adding A Pool Or Hot Tub

Adding a swimming pool, hot tub, or sauna to your home can also be a risky move. While these features may be desirable for you and your family, they could potentially scare away buyers if your home is in an area that doesn’t have many pools or if the weather isn’t conducive to using them year-round. Pools and hot tubs are also expensive to maintain, so you’ll need to keep that in mind if you’re thinking about adding one.

Wallpaper Or Textured Walls

Wallpaper and textured walls can also be a turn-off for buyers. Many people see these as outdated features that are difficult to remove or update. If you’re considering some home improvements, it’s best to avoid wallpaper and textured walls.

Attic Conversions

Attic conversions can be an excellent way to add more living space to your home, but they can also hurt your home’s value. The reason why is because many buyers see attic conversions as unfinished spaces that need more work. They may also be concerned about the potential for moisture and mold in the attic. So if you’re thinking about doing an attic conversion, make sure you finish it properly so it’s more marketable to potential buyers.

High-End Appliances

Adding high-end appliances to your home can also be a risky move. While these appliances may add convenience to your lifestyle, they may also scare away buyers who don’t need or appreciate high-end appliances. Additionally, these appliances can be expensive to maintain and repair.

Bold Colors Or Patterns

Painting your walls in bold colors or using bold patterns can also be a risky move. Many buyers see these as outdated features that are difficult to remove or update. So if you’re thinking about making some home improvements, it’s best to avoid bold colors and patterns.

These are just a handful of home improvements that can potentially harm your home’s value. So if you’re thinking about making any home improvements, be sure to think carefully about how they will affect your home’s value.
